When my father fell ill, I wanted him to come to Kentucky for recovery.
I knew that with our flexible work schedule and healthy eating habits, we could have him back on his feet in no time.
But he said, ''No''.
My dad adored my babygirl, she's his only granddaughter. He really liked my husband, you know he loved me but his answer was still ''No.''
Selfishly and dramatically I thought, ''Dang, he'd rather live in this nursing home than be with me.''
A glimpse into the life and mind of a "Black American Muslim woman" who cannot be totally defined by any combination of those four words.

Peace is created
Bismillah...Ramadan Mubarak!
In my 2013 in review post I ended by saying:
My wish for all who stop by this blog: May you have PEACE with all that Allah has in store for your life in 2014. The good and the bad and the lessons.
That is my constant prayer. To be at peace.
Late evening on January 26, my dad suffered an unusual headache and went to the urgent care.
After an evaluation he was rushed to the hospital due to a brain bleed.
On January 27 he had emergency brain surgery and I was in Detroit by the time he was back from surgery.

My first guilt-free Christmas
I am Muslim, but was raised in the Christian traditions. We
celebrated Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving. However, my parents never taught
me the Santa Claus, Easter Bunny lies because we were Pentecostal.
Each year since accepting Islam I struggled with how to ‘’be’’
with my family during this season of excess and hyper-capitalism and gluttony.
The only good I saw in it was the time off work and time spent with family. But
their celebration made me sad.
This year my youngest nephew (on my side of the family)
reached 18 and is a college student. The tradition had to evolve. But it had to
do so without my direct involvement.
This year no one was up at the crack of dawn opening gifts
around the tree. The family went to the movies and took my uncle with them who
lives in a nursing home. They’ll see my dad tomorrow and it’s more relaxed.
They’ll open modest gifts and I sent money only for my part of the gifts to our
parents.
I know that most Christians don’t believe, any more, that
December 25th is the actual birthday of Jesus, The Christ. I am
encouraged by the number who have studied and adjusted their practices based on
that study.
I am glad that my family no longer feels that my absence
today is greater than my absence any other day. I wish I lived closer or had
the means to travel there more. I wish I was there every Sunday for a family
dinner. But I’m so very happy that I don’t feel bad about missing today and my
family doesn't feel bad that I’m missing today.
I expect to be there for another happy day on our own terms
for our own reasons.

Time...
My mother in laws passing and a business disappointment have made me take a long look at time and timing.
I had discussed with her my plans to return to college and at 43 I know that it's past time and a bit overdue. (she got her first degree at 50 and then 2 masters degrees)
I've also had to think realistically about a second child. I know that I could physically handle it, but am I willing to do what it takes organizationally. A child can't be my motivation to organize my life. I have to want that for my own peace of mind.
A few weeks before my mother in laws transition we were told that the station our radio program airs on was changing from an old school R&B format to comedy. Again I realized how much I was relying on the unreliable whims of people who live in another part of the country. I've had to step up really fast and do some quick research into ways that we can control our own product better. More to come on the details, but time dictated that I move quickly and decisively and it was made painfully clear that my current mode of operation had to change.
Time waits for no man and when our time on this side is up, it is indeed over.
I want to spend more time with my sister and cousins and I want to do more writing for pleasure and publishing.
It's time for me to have more fun, return to school, get my house in order, get to baby making and put my business on the fast track so we we don't lose momentum.

I am almost back....
If you haven't been around long you may need the following disclaimer. I am a blogger, just not on this site LOL I have a real job plus a real blog that I maintain on issues related to local mass transportation.
What this site is is a repository of my memories so that when I do my freelance writing and speaking engagements I have a place that jogs my memory. My speaking gigs to date are primarily at Universities and are on the topics of journalism and entrepreneurship. I do a few free speaking gigs each year teaching people how to craft pre-event and post event press releases. And when my daughter reaches high school, I think I'd like to begin speaking on family/work balance and homeschooling. By then I should have it down to a science. Now, not so much LOL
But I wanted you to know that I still appreciate all of the followers and the lone commenter LOL
Just so you know that even when I'm absent from the blog you are still present in my heart!
Until I squeek some time in to catch up, here's some pics of my two favorite people.

Cocoa is here!
We named "it" Cocoa. It's an African Spur Thigh Tortoise. We wanted an African name and love watching "The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency" so we stole "Cocoa". That's what people say when they knock on doors on the show. Not sure if we spelled it right but either way its a nod to the show.
Details coming on how Cocoa has become part of the homeschool curriculum in the week she's been here.

We're getting a pet! (and how to chose one for your family)
Well, we have come to the end of a long road. We’ve been debating what would be a good pet for us.
I am vehemently opposed to dogs, cats and rats in my house. I don’t like the hair of dogs and cats and any thing that reminds me of a mouse, rat or squirrel is OUT.
But I did want an animal that my daughter could pet and play with, so where do we go?
She has a fish and a 2.5 gallon tank. That’s plenty for us. But fish are only for watching and she is not old enough to feed the fish herself.
So, I began looking at reptiles. After my own process of elimination, I settled on turtles and tortoises. Through research I learned that turtles are quite affordable at around $20-$30 each. But I also learned that they should not be handled, except during the cleaning of their tanks. Their land and water habitat is a breeding ground for salmonella. Uh…NOPE!
Then I found the tortoise. The cost alone made me think no…the animal alone costs around $110-$140. Then the container, food, initial vet exam….whew! However, as I read on, this seemed like the perfect pet.
First they live to be 50 years old. The fun part is that they need exercise 3-4 times per week so she (meaning me ;o) can take him out and let him walk around the house under close supervision. He eats green leafy vegetables, just like we do. He needs UV light which means that with a proper container she can take him outside when she goes outside to play. And there are some very elaborate set ups that she and her father can create to give him a great home. My husband was a college and high school carpentry instructor so he knows how to teach using the content areas of geometry, basic math and vocabulary. We could work on a pot garden to grow food for ourselves and food specifically for the tortoise that needs extra calcium. This has yearly science and wood shop lesson written all over it!
So, I think we found our pet. Now we wait it could take 1 week to 4 months before on is available from our preferred supplier.
Here are my tips for selecting a pet.
1. Do research on what your landlord allows if you rent.
2. Look at your flooring and find a pet that is compatible with your carpet or hardwood floors.
3. Once you have narrowed your search to a type of pet such as dog, cat, reptile, fish then begin looking at initial cost and the cost of maintenance.
4. Once your final decision is made, find a vet FIRST. For example, all vets don’t see all animals. We had to find one that specialized in wild and exotic pets. Also, ask for their advice on where to buy the animal from. The always have a favorite pet store or local breeder.
5. Don’t forget to check the local humane society before buying. They even rescue small furry pets and reptiles. You may be able to save an animal and some dollars.
6. DO NOT give any money as a deposit to reserve and animal until your child has the chance to visit with one, even if its not the one you eventually buy. Make sure they are comfortable handling it and are not afraid.
7. Be certain that the seller has a reasonable return policy. 7 days may not be enough time for you. Especially if you want to have it examined by the vet. And some animals should not be handled for the first 3-4 days as they adapt to the new environment.
I'll post pics when we finally get ours!

What does Christmas really mean?
The older babygirl gets, the more I have to ponder this question.
My husband and I are the only Muslims in our families.
We strive to live our lives as examples of our practice of Islam and very rarely talk "against" the practices our families have chosen to adopt. What I try to get them to do, however, is think about what they are doing and why.
For about three years my husband has tried to beat my family and his over the head with Jeremiah 10:2-5. He asks them what is means and most say it is a general reference to idolotry. We believe it is a condemnation of the people who decorate and worship the tree and it warns us not to do the same. So if you think you can have a tree up and not worship it, I guess you can do it. But are you really sure you are NOT worshipping the tree and the gifts? How can you be sure? Those are the real questions.
This year we are in LasVegas for the holidays. Two weeks here to be exact.
On Christmas Eve my sister in law and her family were still putting ornaments on the tree and I asked my daughter not to join them. She was cool, the fam was cool. End of Round 1.
Her husband is a minister, so I asked what I could expect on Christmas day. Prayer? Devotion? Any religious practice? He said, No. Hmmm? Muslims are taught to stop 5 times each day for the rememberence of Allah and on this one day, we have no time set aside? My sister is a minister as well and there is no family devotion on Christmas day there either. Though I am quick to remind people that Christmas is not the equivalent of Ramadan, I still have an expectation. I wonder why that is?
On Christmas Day, I awoke and my sister in law was cooking. Gifts sat under the tree, people lazily awakened and about 3 hours after stirring my brother in law asks the family to gather (we're in his home). He said he had an empty feeling and he knew what it was, he wanted to lead us in prayer and said that it was prompted by my question, "How do you worship on Christmas?" Before opening gifts, he said he honestly wondered how this was going to work with our new family dynamic. He is a Christian minister, we are Muslims and my other sister-in-law recently married so here come a whole lot of traditions and customs and no one took the lead.
We decided that we have to create our own tradition for this day we call Christmas. We decided on fewer gifts, more devotion and more love for our family. (2 days later the children still have unopened gifts under the tree. Can you say toy overload?) End of Round 2.
We can't stop our family from doing the tree and wrapping paper thing, but we did get them to stop and spend some time honoring the Creator and teaching our children why we gather on this day. Partly we do because most are off work during this time. Another reason is that my husbands mother, the matriarch, wants it this way. She even bought our plane tickets to get us here. We can't boycott, even though we want to at times, because we are taught to respect our elders. I don't think that anyone thinks that Jesus was born on December 25. But we should tell our children why we think he is important enough to celebrate his birthday (if we believe this). Otherwise, lets just call it a family reunion and skip the decorations (my idea :o)....So we find ways to satisfy the requirements and desires of our faith while being good guests and physical reminders to our family. End of Round 3.

Family TV
There is hardly anything that I can watch with my 4 yo that we both enjoy.
Recently I tried to watch AFV with her and she CRACKED UP! She totally got it. There were a few too many "nut" injuries, but it was fun to watch her laugh!

Family Fun Day! Fishing
So, this weekend we went fishing for the first time as a family. We had to find something fun to do as a substitute for going to homecoming. I got hubby a liscense (for us both) for Father's Day and he has been but this was my first time going. I have been fishing but have never caught anything and this day was no exception, lol!
We got baby girl her own pink chair and a bamboo pole (no reel), I packed the cooler and we were good. Speaking of coolers....we were the ONLY PEOPLE, besides one Asian family, that packed a lunch. Every person I saw (read: white), came out to fish with McDonald's. That's not even the closes restaurant to the park. I wondered if it is some KY tradition we missed in our Welcome Packet, lol.
BabyGirl caught her first fish and the first fish of the day.
But she began to get tired and when she caught her second fish, she didn't like it.
Then it got really bad!! LOL!
She recovered and thanked me all evening for taking her fishing. It was fun and we'll be doing more now that the weather is breaking. It's too damn hot to fish otherwise. This park only has "sun up" to
"sun down" fishing so it's ok this time of year. My husband caught a baby catfish too. We kept them all in a bucket but threw them all back before we left. They were too small to keep and we don't eat any of the fish that were out in the lake.
Do you fish? Any good stories?

Cousins
I do a lot of posts on family. I love my family.
My sister and her husband came down and brought thier 13 year old son and 8 year old niece. Despite babygirl being 3 (almost 4) they played like peers. The girls wrestle and jump poor BenBen and he just takes it. He plays balloon games with them, they played Wii and he read to them at bedtime, it was just nice to watch them play together.
November 2004 awwwwww!

Family, fatigue and fun!

We don't have much family here in Kentucky, but the family we have is FUN! When we get together we usually stay up too late, talk too much, eat too much and laugh plenty.
We had a cousin get married this weekend so there were THOUSANDS of us here. I think we doubled the Black count in this town, LOL!!!
This was baby girl's first wedding so she was excited and talked and danced and posed all night. It was a Friday night/Saturday morning wedding and we had a gathering on Saturday afternoon/night/Sunday morning and man....Sunday morning came quickly. I have to be in the studio by 7 a.m. on Sunday's to do my radio show and man I was beat. I took a REAL nap about 11 a.m. and slept until 3.
It was a GREAT weekend. Here are some wedding shots.
What'd you get into this weekend??

Photo Monday? And do it on Sunday?
I didn't do anything particularly green this week so I thought I'd share two of my favorite shots of the week. Among AAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLL the other things I do, I am also a budding photographer. I focus (no pun intended :o) on candid shots.
The first is my husband at the NNPA Convention (Black Press Association). We had a ball! We learned a lot, met so many other Black newspaper publishers, got some ideas and some inspiration. In this shot my husband was collecting newspapers. There was a room with about 3-4 six foot tables full of Black newspapers from around the country that publishers brought with them. Some cities like LA, Detroit and Indianapolis have a weekly Black paper that is larger that the daily paper in Lexington! As I've reminded you before, if you are fortunate enough to have a Black newspaper in your area, pick one up as often as you can. And if possible, subscribe. Most complaints or suggestions you have for the local publisher could probably be fixed with FUNDS, so help them out!

My mom came to town to stay with BabyGirl while we went out of town. Tonight we went to dinner and I caught this one.

Have a great week and I hope you're spending some time OFF line!
Peace to the people!!

Love
I am just in love with my daughter right now.
She is finally becoming a Mommy's girl and I love it. For a while, I was third in her life behind her Dad and Daddy (she loves him so much you can count him twice). But now, she's my new running buddy and I just love it.
Of course I've loved her since I prayed for her to be, but today I feel like I'm falling for her all over again!

The first photo is about 3 months old. The next one she's 3 years old.

Another celebration!
(Press play while reading..It's long so you may need a drink too! :o)
Can you stand all this fuggin' happiness?!
I tend to celebrate EVERYTHING. I love life and love the euphoric emotion we call happiness.
I celebrated my 100th post, my 1 year blog anniversary, my birthday and now.......MY EIGHTH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY!!!!!

About a year ago, I posted "our story". I''ll do a repost so you can keep listening to the music :o) :
""""There was a 17 year old college freshman who was "saved, sanctified and filled with the holy ghost". She really went to college to find a husband. Since she didn't have a career goal, she wasn't sure of what to major in but had a band scholarship, so she chose Music Education.
In the music department there was a music library. It was actually used as a lounge and was a hangout for the choir members and music majors. There was a really handsome senior who locked and unlocked the doors each day. He was a business major but played the trumpet and was a member of the music fraternity.
The freshman and the senior hung out with the group of students that frequented the library. They all went bowling together, ate pizza together, typical college stuff. But the senior was much more serious and had deep feelings for the freshman who was just "dating." They'd have deep conversations about their upbringing and religious backgrounds and could not have been more different. Freshman was "saved", though she didn't know what it meant, and Senior didn't know who or what he believed in. But they keep talking and "dating". So when senior gave freshman a solid gold dome ring for Christmas, he was showing commitment and she saw it as just a gift. Well....
Freshman had been in the band and was tied up all of Fall quarter so she really didn't get a chance to socialize with the rest of the folks until football season was over. After Christmas break, Freshman realized she was HOT! She was being asked out by football players, other freshmen and frat guys. She was totally ignoring senior and began to lose interest because he wasn't as much "fun".
Some "he said/she said" foolishness made Senior really upset with Freshman. Senior tried to get her attention by starting an argument but it backfired and Freshman didn't speak to him anymore. So for the next year and a half that he was on campus (double major) they rarely spoke. But deep in his heart, Senior was hopeful.
Fast forward........
12 years after they met, the guy who "hooked up" freshman and senior committed suicide. The funeral was in the town that Freshman was now living as a recently divorced single woman. The suicide made Freshman realize that whatever problems she had with anyone were petty and she resolved to squash any feuds.
When senior didn't make it to the funeral (he was living 400 mi. away) Freshman asked around until she found his address and wrote him a letter basically saying that she didn't remember what they argued about but she wasn't mad, heard he was Muslim and hoped he was at peace.
Shocked that she found him, he wrote to her back but couldn't wait for the letter to reach her and called her on the phone. They began talking again and found that they had much in common and had the same goals of entrepreneurship and children and home schooling. He was already a Muslim and she had been studying Islam.
During their courtship he explained that he had never been married because freshman was the only girl he ever imagined himself married to.
Fourteen years after they met and two years after they reconnected, Freshman and Senior married, started a business and a family.""""
To my husband....I hope this life of ours is better than you imagined! Love you more, Sister P

I like to be spoiled. I want to live a pampered life of luxury and lavishness, but those weren't the cards I was dealt. I'm a sister who (insert Donna Summer voice here and sing) "works hard for the money" so a few days out of the year I want to "do me" ALL DAY.
My birthday was Saturday, April 26.
I woke up to kisses from my family and calls from my friends and relatives. I was a bit tired because I was up until 3am altering my outfit. I had to sew the buttons down on my shirt and hem my pants. (One of the blogs I love explains my problem better than I have energy for right now, I'm trying to remain on the happy vibe.)
After a slow and leisurely stroll around my room getting ready I went downstairs.
My DAM (diamond among men) husband made me a homemade pancake breakfast. We ate big because I wasn't going to eat again until dinner.
Then I hopped in my (environment killin', gas guzzlin') truck and headed for Cincinnati. I bumped Carl Thomas ALL the way. "All You've Given" is just.....no words.
I was on my way to meet my girl there for....drumroll please

I had FRONT ROW SEATS!! I had a ball. My friend and I both said we didn't expect to have such an emotional reaction to this, but we did. It made you laugh and cry and smile and have chills. I don't think the Broadway version could be any better than this touring cast. They were GREAT. (I'm going to do a post with spoilers on it later)
I saw a few people from Big City Wanna Be that drove up too. Anytime I can sit in a place full 'o Black folks and watch some Black folks, I'm enjoying a fat slice of heaven!
We ate at one of my favorite "chain" restaurants, Maggiano's. I didn't know it was a chain until we ate at the one in Vegas then I went on line and found them everywhere. We used to go when we lived in Chicago. (My other favorite is Houston's, hope one is coming my way soon.)
I got flowers, cupcakes and a pillow and a bag (which I'll tell you about too in another post).
I will have photos soon. Haven't had time to look at my camera but I wanted to get this up.
Hope everyone is having a GREAT WEEK, mine is off to a BANGIN' start.
God Bless!

Can he make you thin?
My sister called me one night to tell me to watch this but I was too busy. I had seen the commercials with his declaration of "I can make you thin!" but I was skeptical.
Well, when I was in Detroit she tried to show me some of the techniques and I almost passed out laughing.
But the next night I watched it and....I think it works. I have used some of the techniques to stop a habit I've had since I was in the womb (thumbsucking) and it has really helped so he may be on to something. If I show up on here in a bikini then it worked.
Have you seen the show? I've only had time to see two episodes but I'm going to work on watching them next week.
